Social Action

The mission of social action in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is to promote leadership, advocacy, education, engagement, and empowerment to effect social change and public policy in our communities, counties, state, and nation. Delta Sigma Theta has been committed to service through social action since our founding in 1913. Our 22 Founders participated in the Suffrage March of 1913, just two months after establishing the Sorority.

Since our chapter’s charter, the Social Action Committee, under the direction of the National Social Action Commission, has been an integral part of the movement to secure political, educational and economic rights for all Black people.

The goals of the Social Action Committee are:

  • To increase knowledge of current local and national issues so that the community will be informed and effective citizens and advocates
  • To encourage political awareness and participation
  • To influence the enactment of legislation, nationally and locally, of particular interest to African Americans and women
  • To maintain vigilance over action or inaction by local judicial and administrative agencies and officials
  • To volunteer as leaders in civic and social action organizations
  • To encourage increased appointments of African American women in policy-making positions in government, nationally and locally

In order to accomplish these goals, the Social Action Committee engages in the following activities:

  • Coordinates the chapter’s participation and involvement in:
    • Delta Days in the Nation’s Capital
    • Delta Day at the State Capital
    • Local meetings with GA representatives under the Gold Dome
  • Coordinates political forums
  • Conducts voter registration drives and voter education forums
  • Conducts workshops and forums addressing current social and political issues
  • Encourages the community to be active participants in the election process and to be informed consumers of the political issues
