Arts and Letters

The mission of the Arts & Letters Committee of the Atlanta Suburban Alumnae Chapter is directly aligned with that of the National Commission on Arts and Letters established in 1973 by National President Lillian Benbow. ASAC’s Arts and Letters Committee strives to boldly advance the African American experience by highlighting the artistic contributions of African American people of the past and present, elevating them to public attention through the medium of music, dance, drama, and poetry.

The Arts and Letters Committee goal is to stimulate interest and promote positive images in the Arts of African Americans and other minorities throughout our local community through various initiatives. In the past we have hosted book clubs with local authors on the Delta Authors on Tour list, dedicated a library “ASAC Reading Center” to Ivy Preparatory Academy, a local charter school in our service area, and partnered with other committees such as Social Action and Internal Development for collaborative book clubs.

ASAC’s Arts and Letters Committee goals for this biennium are:

  • Support the artistic contributions of African American and other minorities in our local community while navigating our “new normal” safely (Delta Red Carpet outings, DSTv series, Delta Authors on Tour, local concerts, and plays)
  • Name our book club
  • Collaborate with other committees to enhance artistic experiences
  • Continue our partnership with Ivy Preparatory Academy to support the scholars and the ASAC Reading Center

We will accomplish these goals by:

  • Engaging the committee, chapter, and community in supporting local events
  • Designing creative ways to safely attend or virtually support local community artistic events in our service area
  • Connecting with the designee of Ivy Preparatory Academy to discuss and plan our partnership for the sororal year
  •  Enhancing our book club series with a name
